Trench Safety: Five Critical Steps That Save Lives on Every Jobsite

Every year, trench and excavation incidents change lives in an instant. A trench may appear stable one moment and collapse the next, leaving workers with little or no opportunity to escape. Soil is surprisingly heavy—just one cubic yard can weigh as much as a small pickup truck—making even a shallow collapse potentially fatal.

The good news is that most trench accidents are preventable. Proper planning, the right protective equipment, and following OSHA requirements dramatically reduce the risk of serious injury or death.

1. Always Have a Competent Person

OSHA requires a competent person to inspect trenches daily and whenever conditions change, such as after rainstorms, vibrations from nearby traffic, or other events that could affect soil stability.

A competent person has the knowledge and authority to identify hazards and stop work until conditions are safe.

2. Use the Proper Protective System

Any trench five feet deep or greater generally requires a protective system unless the excavation is made entirely in stable rock.

Common protective systems include:

  • Sloping
  • Benching
  • Trench boxes (shielding)
  • Shoring systems

The correct solution depends on soil classification, depth, and jobsite conditions.

3. Provide Safe Entry and Exit

Workers should never have to climb excessive distances to leave a trench.

Ladders, ramps, or other safe means of egress should be located so employees do not have to travel more than 25 feet laterally to exit the excavation.

4. Keep Materials Away from the Edge

Spoil piles, tools, and heavy equipment should remain at least two feet from the edge of the trench whenever possible. This helps reduce pressure on trench walls and minimizes the risk of material falling onto workers below.

5. Never Assume Yesterday’s Trench Is Safe Today

Changing weather, nearby construction activity, groundwater, and vibrations can all affect soil conditions. Every trench should be inspected before each shift and throughout the day whenever conditions change.

PPE Is Only One Part of the Solution
